Sources of Pain
There are two basic divisions of Chronic Pain Syndrome:
-Cancerous Pain
-Non-Cancerous Pain
Cancerous Pain occurs as a result of tumor growth. Most cancer pain is a terminal condition causing debilitation and disabilities resulting in multiple medical problems.
Non-Cancerous Pain possesses an entirely different host of disorders. These may either be a result of aging, or may have occurred as a result of an accident, either at work or in an auto.
-Aging disorders can be osteoporosis, rheumatological disorders, chronic tendinitis, or bursitis.
-Work and Auto accidents usually result in neck or back injuries such as herniated disc.
-Repetitive motion injuries of upper extremities are frequent causes of pain conditions evaluated in the office, such as: Carpal Tunnel, Cubital Tunnel syndrome, reflex sympathetic dystrophies or complex regional pain syndrome. Some conditions occur spontaneously and other times, attributed to trauma, such as: Fibromyalgia, or Myofascial pain syndrome.
We also offer treatment of headache conditions, sleep disorders, radiation neuropathy/myelopathy, multiple sclerosis, diabetic neuropathy, herpes zoster (shingles) and other numerous pain syndromes.
Another aspect that we are deeply concerned about is psychological treatment. Pain is closely related to a person's emotional state. Existential suffering and its associated anxiety and depressive symptomatology is recognized, addressed and treated.
Pain Management Options
Chronic Pain is a multi-factorial problem. Therefore, the rectification of the problem must be extremely comprehensive. Every attempt is made to involve the patient, either supervised or self-motivated, in physical conditioning therapy.
Sleep disorders are addressed fervently. Dr. Pelicci is a sleep specialist. Also, there is a trained specialist to evaluate patients, address the disorder, and treat it properly. Trigger point therapy is used to break up refractory areas along with peripheral nerve blocks, which in turn increase mobility while decreasing the need for pharmacological agents.
Obesity is a concomitant medical problem of chronic pain suffers. As a result of the pain, victims may over eat through a state of depression, complicating their existing disability. We have nutritional counseling as well as physical conditioning and pharmacological agents to control this problem when it is present.
If surgery is required, Dr. Pelicci consults with several local surgeons. Usually the conditions of chronic pain patients are so complex that referral to a university hospital becomes most appropriate. The institutions commonly consulted with are, Jefferson University in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, and John Hopkins University in Maryland.
The mainstay of pain management is pharmacological management. Dr. Pelicci is a Board Certified Neurologist, Certified in Pain Management, and a Board Eligible Psychiatrist who is well versed in the pharmacological agents used in these various disciplines. Thorough knowledge of these medications as applied to the chronic pain patient provides life saving relief.
